A green roof, or ‘Garden Roof,’
is a plant covered roof that provides an attractive and energy-saving
alternative to conventional roofing.
From top to Bottom:

Vegetation
- A wide variety of plants are suitable for garden roofs, and remember
that fertilization may be required
Soils
- Soil is engineered to be lightweight, to be less strain on the
structure. It also supplies essential nutrients, water and
oxygen.
Filter Fabric
– A filter sheet prevents fine particles in the growing medium from
being washed out of the soil and clogging the drains.
Drainage and Aeration
-must be able to drain away excess
moisture, while retaining enough water for plant growth.
Root Barrier
- To prevent roots from penetrating the roofing membrane, a root
barrier is installed.
Insulation–
Expanded polystyrene foam insulation
Roofing Membrane
- a waterproof membrane is installed, preferably PVC.
Structural Roof Deck
Check
- Most importantly, the roof
structure must be designed to support the roof +wet soils + vegetation
+ rain + snow loads.
This roof will save the working life of your roof, keep your building
cooler, and save energy.
